Prepositions (grammar)

Prepositions are short words such as on, in, to, at, before etc. that usually stand in front of nouns.

Types of Prepositions

Prepositions are used to indicate direction, time, location, spatial relationships, and various types of other relationships.

  • Direction: Go to the shop.
  • Time: We’ve lived in Paris since 2015.
  • Location: He is at home.
  • Space: The dog hid under the table.

Unfortunately, there are not fixed rules for determining which preposition to use with a particular combination of words. The best way to learn which prepositions to use with which words is to pay attention to which combinations sound right.
